  • Students meeting essay length requirements without over- or under-shooting
  • Marketers writing meta descriptions (150–160 chars), tweets (280), or YouTube titles (70)
  • Translators billing by source word count
  • Copywriters keeping Facebook ads, LinkedIn posts, and Google ads inside platform limits

Reading time benchmarks

  • 500 words ≈ 2 minutes of reading
  • 1,000 words ≈ 4 minutes
  • 2,500 words ≈ 10 minutes
  • 10,000 words ≈ 40 minutes

Reading time assumes 250 words per minute, the typical silent reading speed for adults.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Word Counter work?
It runs a lightweight JavaScript script entirely in your browser. Every time you type, it re-counts words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs using regular expressions. No data is sent to any server.
What counts as one word?
Any sequence of non-whitespace characters separated by spaces, tabs, or line breaks. Hyphenated phrases like state-of-the-art are one word. Numbers and code tokens also count as words. Emojis and pure punctuation do not.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is based on an average adult silent reading speed of 250 words per minute. For technical or dense content, actual reading time may be 50–100% longer.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. This tool runs 100% client-side in your browser using native JavaScript. Your text never leaves your device — no analytics, no logging, no server calls.
Can I use this for essays or blog posts?
Yes. The counter is accurate for essays, blog posts, articles, social media captions, meta descriptions, tweets, and any text-based content. It handles unlimited length.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Once the page loads, the word counter works without an internet connection. Install it as a PWA (Add to Home Screen) for instant access on your phone.
